Optase Hylo Night no longer contains the statement ‘may contain peanut oil’ because the source of Vitamin A has changed, and it no longer contains peanut oil.
In previous formulations of OPTASE HYLO Night the ingredient Vitamin A (retinol palmitate) may have contained a small amount of peanut oil.
Peanut oil and Peanuts, as potential allergens, are not the same. Peanuts contain proteins which are the allergen part. The peanut oil that was used in Optase Hylo Night was ‘refined peanut oil’ that was processed in a way that removes the peanut proteins from the oil (i.e. the allergens).
The Committee on Toxicology of Chemicals in Food concluded that the use of refined peanut oil in food and medicinal products is without risk to sensitive individuals (https://cot.food.gov.uk/sites/default/files/cot/cotpeanutall.pdf ) As such it is not required under the FDA monograph to list peanut oil separately or to provide a particular warning as it is not classified as an allergen.
In Europe this product has been on the market for over a decade with millions of units sold and there has not been one report of a patient having a reaction to the peanut oil. In Europe, the statement ‘may contain peanut oil’ is not even on the pack.
